We encourage 1st-time Home Buyers to attend Family Housing Advisory Service's Home Buyer Workshops.

FHAS, Inc. is a non-profit organization that helps families prepare for home ownership. They offer a series of 3 evening classes once a month that last 4 hours each or an all day Saturday session. These classes are offered in English and Spanish.

Neil Vacek, Assistant Director of the HomeOwnership Program, does an excellent job at discussing each phase in-depth. In addition, he invites local experts in their respective fields to share their knowledge on the subjects. The workshops cover the role of banks and mortgage lenders, various loan packages, the loan process, credit issues, contracts, the role of real estate agents, homeowner's insurance, appraisals, what to expect out of a home inspection, how to utilize the inspection report, and dealing with the inspection contingency.

Greg Wayman volunteers his time every other month to present on the last night of the workshops. His 1.5 hour presentation is filled with actual photos taken on inspections in the Omaha Metro and real-life examples of issues that past clients were faced with. Not only does he show you the problem, he explains why it's a problem.
